The iO system combines a round brush head with oscillating rotations and micro-vibrations generated through the bristles. The design allows the brush head to clean around individual teeth while reaching along the gumline and into spaces between teeth.

According to Oral-B, the iO removes twice as much plaque overall as a manual toothbrush and six times more plaque along the gumline. These results are based on the company’s clinical testing of the technology.

The toothbrushes also use a pressure sensor designed to help users adjust how firmly they brush. A green light indicates the recommended pressure, red signals excessive pressure and white indicates that additional pressure may be needed.
Models from the iO6 through iO10 can connect to the Oral-B app, which provides real-time guidance on brushing position and coverage. The iO9 and iO10 include additional technology that adjusts brushing performance based on the user’s technique.
All models from the iO2 through iO10 include a two-minute timer and 30-second reminders intended to help users spend enough time brushing each area of the mouth.
In a press release, Oral-B also referenced broader research on powered toothbrushes. An 11-year study published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology in 2019 found that people who used powered toothbrushes experienced 20% less tooth loss than those who used manual toothbrushes.
