Oral-B Releases New iO Series Performance Results Against Sonic and Manual Toothbrushes

Oral-B has released new performance data for its iO Series electric toothbrush, reporting stronger plaque removal and gum-health results than sonic and manual toothbrushes used in several clinical comparisons.

The iO Series uses a round brush head with oscillating-rotating movement and micro-vibrations. According to Oral-B, the design is intended to improve cleaning around individual teeth, along the gumline and between teeth.

In an eight-week comparison with the Sonicare DiamondClean Smart, the Oral-B iO removed 29% more plaque across the mouth and 41% more plaque between teeth, according to the study results released by the company. The iO also produced greater reductions in gum bleeding and gingivitis.
A separate six-month comparison found the iO removed 61.9% more plaque along the gumline. Among participants who began the study with elevated gum bleeding, 96.4% of iO users reached healthy gum status after six months, compared with 81.8% of Sonicare users.
Oral-B also reported results from an eight-week comparison with a manual toothbrush. In that study, 81.8% of iO users reached healthy gum status by the end of the study, compared with 23.6% of manual toothbrush users.

In a recent press release, the company also points to a 2026 analysis comparing several types of electric and manual toothbrush technology. In that analysis, oscillating-rotating brushes ranked highest for plaque reduction, followed by sonic, ultrasonic, other electric and manual toothbrushes.
Oral-B currently offers several models in the iO lineup, including the iO2, iO3 and iO9. Each uses the same core oscillating-rotating technology, while higher-end models include additional guidance and personalization features.
